Itinerary at a Glance
Begin your journey in Norway’s vibrant capital city. Settle into the historic Christiania Teater Hotel and gather with the group for a welcome cocktail and memorable opening dinner at the iconic Theatercaféen. Spend the next day exploring Oslo with a local guide, including Frogner Park and several of the city’s most fascinating cultural and historic sites. Those participating in CME will gather for an afternoon session, thoughtfully scheduled to frontload some of the learning and create flexibility throughout the week.
Travel north above the Arctic Circle to Alta, where the landscape shifts dramatically to snow-covered forests, frozen rivers, and wide open tundra. Enjoy a guided snowshoe walk through peaceful winter scenery before experiencing one of the Arctic’s most iconic activities: dog sledding through the Alta River valley. Continue across the Finnmark plateau into Norwegian Lapland to meet Sámi reindeer herders and learn about their traditions and connection to the land.
Enjoy a relaxed morning with optional CME or time to unwind at the lodge before heading out with expert guides in search of the Northern Lights. Enjoy a truly unique experience — an overnight stay in the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel, a remarkable structure built entirely from snow and ice.
Your final full day includes an unforgettable snowmobile journey across the Finnmark plateau, followed by a special farewell dinner featuring local Arctic ingredients and warm Nordic hospitality.
Depart for home carrying the memories of a remarkable week exploring one of the world’s most beautiful winter landscapes.
Not ready to leave Norway? Neither are we. Extend your adventure with three unforgettable nights in the spectacular Lofoten Islands. Stay in your own sea-view rorbu cabin in the iconic fishing village of Reine, paddle through Arctic waters beneath snow-covered peaks, explore tiny coastal villages, and head out after dark in search of the Northern Lights. Remote, wild, cozy, and ridiculously beautiful-this is Arctic Norway at its very best. We can’t wait to share it with you!

Why Norway with MedTreks?
Medical professionals spend their lives caring for others — our goal on this journey is to take care of you. We have intentionally designed this Norway experience for a small group of curious, adventurous travelers who want to explore the Norwegian Arctic in a way that feels personal, comfortable, and memorable.
Norway is a bucket list trip for many. And for good reason! Rather than moving through Norway on large group tours, you’ll experience this remarkable region through genuine local connection. You’ll stay in thoughtfully selected accommodations, meet the people who call this landscape home, and hear their stories — offering a more authentic understanding of Arctic culture and daily life. Even our Northern Lights experiences are designed to feel intimate and unrushed, allowing space to truly take in the magic of the setting.
We have carefully selected lodges and chosen dining experiences that thoughtfully and artistically showcase the region and the people. We will be hosted by the local expert guide throughout the itinerary. CME is thoughtfully woven into the experience, creating opportunities to expand your perspective on medicine beyond the walls of the hospital, while still leaving space to slow down and simply enjoy where you are.
We would love to share Norway with you!
A Closer Look
Oslo: a beautiful beginning
The trip begins in Oslo, a city that blends modern design with a strong sense of history. It’s a comfortable place to arrive, adjust to the time change, and settle in before heading north.
You’ll spend time exploring the city with a local guide, followed by a welcome dinner that brings the group together early in the week.
Alta: Gateway to the Arctic
From Oslo, we travel north above the Arctic Circle to Alta, where the landscape opens into snow-covered forest, frozen rivers, and wide tundra.
This is where the pace of the trip shifts. Days are spent moving through the terrain by snowshoe, dog sled, and snowmobile, with time to rest and reset in deluxe lodges chosen for both comfort and location.
Sámi connection and Arctic culture
Part of the experience includes time with Sámi reindeer herders. You’ll learn about their traditions and how daily life is shaped by the Arctic environment.
These interactions offer context for the landscape you’re moving through and a more direct understanding of northern Norway beyond the activities themselves.
The Northern Lights
A key part of this itinerary is the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. While sightings can never be guaranteed, we structure the trip to give you strong conditions for viewing. Of course, this means staying in areas with minimal light pollution and working with local guides who monitor weather and solar activity closely.
Evenings are flexible, allowing us to adjust timing and location as needed.
CME Course Info
International Wilderness Life Support (IWLS)
For medical professionals participating in CME, our Norway trip includes the option to complete International Wilderness Life Support (IWLS) Certification. This hybrid course combines self-paced online modules before the trip with practical, scenario-based learning during the expedition.
IWLS is designed for clinicians who want to feel more prepared to assess, treat, and make decisions in remote and resource-limited environments. This includes places where weather, distance, limited supplies, and delayed evacuation can shape patient care.
Course topics include:
• Patient assessment in austere environments
• C-spine stabilization and patient movement
• Hypothermia packaging and environmental illness
• Wound care with limited resources
• Splinting and orthopedic injury management
• Ocean and water medicine
• Travel medicine and global health principles
• Wilderness medical kits and evacuation decision-making
• Scenario-based simulations for certification
Participants may earn up to 28 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and/or 28 nursing contact hours through the IWLS course.
As with all MedTreks trips, the travel experience comes first. The CME component is available for those who want it and is designed to support the expedition experience without turning the trip into a traditional conference.

Lodging
One of the elements that makes this journey especially memorable is the thoughtful mix of accommodations that reflect both the design sensibility and natural beauty of Norway. Each property has been intentionally selected to complement the rhythm of the itinerary — from elegant city stays that place you in the heart of Norwegian culture, to peaceful wilderness lodges surrounded by mountains, rivers, and open Arctic sky. These spaces are warm, welcoming, and designed for comfort, often featuring Scandinavian simplicity, cozy gathering areas, and inviting places to relax after a day outside.
During the journey, you will also enjoy an unforgettable overnight stay in a beautifully crafted ice igloo hotel — a truly unique Arctic experience that feels far warmer and cozier than you might imagine.
In contrast, you will spend time in a charming family-run boutique lodge and an elegant wilderness property privately reserved just for our group, allowing for a more intimate and personal atmosphere. Together, these accommodations allow you to experience Norway not just through its landscapes, but through the inviting spaces you call home each night.
