160 million years ago, Madagascar broke away from the African continent and began an experiment in isolation that produced some of the most extraordinary life on Earth. This nine-day journey lets you witness the result firsthand. You’ll spend your first days in the dry baobab forests of the west, tracking endemic wildlife through golden savannah and walking the reserve after dark. Then the island shifts entirely: lush rainforest, mist-covered mountains, and the most extraordinary concentration of lemur species on Earth. For medical professionals who spend their working lives in controlled environments, our Madagascar CME Safari is the rare place and opportunity to be where nothing is predictable, everything is alive, and the wonder of the natural world surrounds you every step of the way.

Trip Highlights

  • Encounter the Fossa in the wild — Madagascar’s largest carnivore and one of the most elusive predators on the planet
  • The Avenue of the Baobabs at sunrise and sunset — standing among these ancient giants in the early morning mist and again as the sky turns red behind them
  • Nocturnal walks in three different reserves — Kirindy, VOIMMA, and Palmarium each reveal a different cast of after-dark creatures, from mouse lemurs to the spectral Aye-Aye
  • Lemur Island and Mantadia National Park — two distinct lemur experiences in a single day: challenging primary rainforest hiking followed by an intimate afternoon with habituated species
  • Palmarium Private Reserve — a sanctuary owned by a dedicated naturalist, home to rare species and the setting for your Aye-Aye night encounter
  • Two landscapes, one journey — the deliberate east-west structure of this trip gives you a genuinely comparative experience of Madagascar’s ecological extremes

MedTreks is a high-touch adventure travel company built by medical professionals. We design carefully curated trips with trusted local partners, strong attention to safety and comfort, and a team that’s deeply involved before, during, and after you travel. CME is available on most trips, but the experience is designed as a vacation first.

You arrive in Antananarivo, get your bearings over an evening briefing, and by the next morning you’re on a flight west to Morondava and deep into Kirindy Reserve — tracking the Fossa after dark on your first nocturnal walk. Two more days in the dry forest deliver a private reserve, a sunrise, and the Avenue of the Baobabs at both sunset and dawn before a flight east pivots the entire trip: the arid west gives way to the dripping rainforest of Andasibe, where a challenging hike through Mantadia National Park brings Diademed Sifaka and Ruffed Lemurs overhead, and a tranquil afternoon on Lemur Island brings them right to your feet. The journey deepens at Palmarium — reached by boat across a still lake — where a full day in a private naturalist’s reserve culminates in a night walk for the Aye-Aye, Madagascar’s most spectral creature. A highland drive back to the capital during our Madagascar CME Safari, a final morning among the hilltop palaces of Antananarivo, and nine days of the eighth continent are behind you.

Why Madagascar for Medical Professionals

The island’s biodiversity is, in the most literal sense, a lesson in evolutionary medicine. Over 90% of its wildlife is endemic — shaped by millions of years of isolation into forms and adaptations that have no parallel elsewhere. Watching a Fossa hunt, observing the neurological precision of an Aye-Aye’s elongated finger as it probes for grubs, or simply standing inside a primary rainforest that has remained intact for millennia — these are experiences that put the pace and pressure of clinical life into a different perspective during our Madagascar CME Safari.
