The Experience

Why People Dream of Climbing Kilimanjaro

  • Standing on the highest point in Africa at sunrise — watching glaciers glow while clouds stretch endlessly below you.
  • Walking through five distinct ecological zones in one trek — from humid rainforest to open moorland to stark alpine desert, all within a single week of hiking.
  • The shared rhythm of the climb — moving at the same steady pace, eating meals together in camp, and forming bonds that only happen when people work toward something hard as a team.
  • The quiet moments on the mountain — early mornings, star-filled skies, and long stretches of trail where the world feels very far away and very simple.
  • The confidence that comes from pushing past self-doubt — discovering you can keep going even when it feels uncomfortable, tired, or uncertain.
  • Reaching the summit after the long night climb — that moment when exhaustion meets disbelief and pride, and the reality of what you just accomplished finally sinks in.
  • Coming home changed in small but real ways — stronger, calmer, and more certain about what you’re capable of, long after the photos are shared.

Itinerary at a Glance

Days 1–3

You’ll begin in Moshi, Tanzania, settling into a peaceful riverside lodge and meeting your mountain team for a full trip briefing, gear checks, and preparation. From there, the trek starts at Machame Gate, climbing through dense rainforest where the air is thick with mist and birdsong. During these first days, the focus is on finding your pace and letting your body adjust. As you gain elevation, the scenery gradually opens into moorland and wide volcanic plateaus.

Days 4-6

Midway through the trek, you’ll move into true alpine terrain, including a key acclimatization day that takes you to Lava Tower at over 15,000 feet before descending to camp—an important strategy that supports summit success. From there, you’ll climb the iconic Barranco Wall, traverse high ridges, and continue gradually upward toward Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt. Throughout these days, the schedule is intentionally structured to balance physical effort with recovery, hydration, and ongoing check-ins.

Days 7-9

Summit day during our Kilimanjaro Climb for Medical Professionals begins just after midnight, with a slow, steady ascent under headlamp to the crater rim and on to Uhuru Peak. If conditions allow, you’ll reach the top near sunrise, where you’ll see glaciers and cloud-covered plains far below. Afterward, you’ll take time to celebrate and take in the moment. Then, you’ll descend to lower elevations for rest, warmth, and reflection. Finally, you’ll finish the trek the following day and return to Moshi for a well-earned shower, real bed, and shared stories from the climb.

You don’t need technical climbing skills for this Kilimanjaro Climb, but you should be comfortable hiking for several hours a day, multiple days in a row, on uneven terrain and at altitude. Summit day is long and demanding, so cardiovascular fitness and leg strength are important. We recommend starting training several months in advance with regular hiking, stair climbing, and aerobic conditioning. If you can comfortably hike 8–10 miles with elevation gain, you’re on the right track.

No technical mountaineering experience is required. This is a trekking route, not a climb that involves ropes or ice axes. That said, previous experience with multi-day hikes or backpacking can be helpful, especially for understanding pacing, layering, and managing fatigue over consecutive days.

The Machame Route is specifically chosen for its strong acclimatization profile. The itinerary includes gradual elevation gains and a dedicated “climb high, sleep low” day to help your body adjust. Guides monitor everyone daily for altitude symptoms, and MedTreks emphasizes hydration, pacing, and early reporting of symptoms. If someone is not tolerating altitude safely, guides are empowered to make conservative decisions, including descent if needed.

Summit day begins around midnight and involves a slow, steady ascent under headlamp to the crater rim and then across to Uhuru Peak. It is cold, long, and mentally challenging—but you’ll be supported by guides who carefully manage pace and check in frequently. Most climbers reach the summit around sunrise, then begin descending the same day to much lower elevation, which helps with recovery.

You’ll sleep in high-quality expedition tents, typically shared with one other participant unless you request a single tent. Camps have designated dining tents and toilet facilities. Expect early nights and surprisingly good meals prepared by the trekking crew.

All guides are trained in mountain first aid and altitude illness recognition. In addition, daily check-ins allow for early identification of symptoms. If needed, oxygen and evacuation plans are already in place. Above all, MedTreks faculty and leadership emphasize conservative decision-making and safety over summit success.

You’ll need proper cold-weather layers, waterproof outerwear, sturdy hiking boots, a warm sleeping bag rated for sub-freezing temperatures, trekking poles, and a good headlamp for summit night. To help you prepare, a detailed packing list will be provided well in advance. Additionally, we’re happy to review any gear questions with you before departure.

Yes, some gear such as sleeping bags, trekking poles, and jackets can be rented locally if needed. However, we strongly recommend bringing properly fitted boots and any items you prefer to test during training hikes.

Tipping is customary on Kilimanjaro and is an important part of supporting the local team who make the climb possible. Therefore, we’ll provide clear tipping guidelines and help organize group tipping at the end of the trek so it’s straightforward and fair.

Trip pricing typically includes airport transfers, lodge accommodations in Moshi, all mountain accommodations, all meals on the mountain, park fees and permits, the full trekking crew, and local guide services. However, international flights, visas, travel insurance, tips, and some personal gear are not included. For clarity, full details are provided upon registration.

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance that includes high-altitude trekking and evacuation coverage is required for participation. For that reason, we’ll provide recommendations for policies that meet these requirements.

Absolutely. Many guests choose to add a wildlife safari or beach time in Zanzibar after the climb. Additionally, we can help coordinate extensions through our local partners once you’re registered for the trek.

“It was the trip of a lifetime! So much beauty and fun and learning. It was so great to be surrounded by like-minded people who share passion for medicine and the outdoors. Ari was organized and flexible with our schedule. She was focused on our learning but also on our FUN!”

“Wonderful course combined with a once in a lifetime trip and amazing instructors!”

“Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.”
