Welcome to MedTreks Kenya

Strengthening the Global Health Workforce

Welcome to our MedTreks Kenya Global Health program! This is an ongoing collaboration between health professionals committed to advancing global health through education, connection, and sustainable impact.

In partnership with Village HopeCore International (HopeCore)—a trusted Kenyan NGO based at the foot of Mt. Kenya—this program is the result of a relationship that began 25 years ago (more on our history below). Since then, MedTreks has worked closely with HopeCore to design a global health experience that goes beyond short-term outreach.

Through clinical training, public health education, and cross-cultural exchange, MedTreks Kenya helps build local capacity while offering healthcare professionals a hands-on, immersive, and ethically grounded approach to global health. At MedTreks, we believe that meaningful global health work is rooted in long-term partnerships, mutual learning, and respect for the communities we serve. To this date we have brought over 100 medical professionals to Kenya through our program in the last 10 years.

We look forward to welcoming you to Kenya!

Why This Program Exists

A Global Health Field Course Rooted in Connection, Community & Capacity-Building

Too often, global health experiences can feel superficial and transactional—brief visits that risk becoming a “band-aid” approach, offering short-term solutions without investing in long-term change. MedTreks Kenya was created as a response to that model.

This program exists to train the next generation of global health professionals to engage responsibly, respectfully, and with a deep understanding of context and collaboration. Our goal is not to “drop in and help,” but to build long-term capacity by learning from and working alongside local leaders who are transforming health outcomes across an entire region. It is built to foster real partnerships and support community-led solutions that endure long after we’ve gone home.

About HopeCore

Village HopeCore International is a community-based organization in Chogoria, Kenya, dedicated to transforming the health and economic wellbeing of rural families. HopeCore’s work now reaches over 700 villages on the slopes of Mt. Kenya—an astounding impact made possible by a model rooted in education, healthcare delivery, and economic empowerment. Through this partnership, students and professionals are invited into a living example of grassroots public health in action—to see firsthand how locally driven solutions can lead to lasting global impact.

Clinical Global Health Field Course

About Our Program

Our MedTreks Kenya Clinical & Global Health Field Course Program is a collaborative initiative designed to enhance clinical learning and healthcare capacity for U.S. medical professionals, students, and Kenyan healthcare teams. With Sub-Saharan Africa representing only 3% of the global health workforce yet bearing 24% of the global disease burden (WHO), this program fosters a field-based clinical knowledge exchange. Participants engage in three primary areas:

Primary Areas of Participant Involvement:

  • Clinical Care: Hands-on experience alongside Kenyan healthcare providers in hospitals and community clinics.
  • Public Health & Community Outreach: Participating in health education, screenings, and preventive programs.
  • Global Health Learning & Research: Engaging in workshops, case discussions, and collaborative research projects.

Why We Love the Work that We Do

There’s a certain magic in Chogoria. It’s in the sound of morning birdsong outside the clinic gates, the warmth of tea shared after a long day in the field, the laughter of schoolchildren during a health lesson, and the quiet determination of local leaders solving complex challenges with heart and ingenuity.

We love this work because it reminds us why we became healthcare professionals in the first place: to serve, to learn, to connect. This is global health that uplifts everyone involved—rooted in humility, grounded in community, and infused with joy.

We hope you’ll join us.

Our History in Kenya

Our roots in Kenya run deep—this program was built on decades of trust, shared vision, and family legacy. I first came to Chogoria in 1987 as a child, accompanying my parents on a global health field course. My father, Dr. Phil Rasori, partnered with Dr. Kajira Mugambi to launch Village HopeCore International in 2000, starting with microloans for local women. Since then, HopeCore has grown to serve over 700 villages and 450,000 people. After returning to Kenya post-college, I began shaping what would become MedTreks Kenya. In 2017, we launched our first trip—and we’ve been back every year since. This isn’t just a program we run—it’s a community we’re deeply committed to ~ Ari Rasori, MedTreks Kenya Founder & Director

Our Guiding Principles

The Four Pillars of MedTreks Kenya

The MedTreks Kenya Global Health Field Course was built with intention. From the very beginning, we set out to create a program that wasn’t just meaningful for our participants—but truly impactful and respectful to the communities we work with. Over the past two decades, our team has continued to refine and ground this experience in what we believe are the four essential principles of ethical and effective global health engagement.

Sustainability & Ethics in Global Health

At the heart of our program is a commitment to doing global health differently. We don’t believe in parachuting in with temporary fixes. Instead, we focus on long-term collaboration that supports community-driven solutions.

Authentic Collaboration with Local Leaders

We are proud to walk alongside Village HopeCore International, a locally led organization that has been transforming public health in Kenya for over 25 years. Our participants work directly with Kenyan healthcare providers, educators, and outreach teams—learning not just about the challenges of rural healthcare, but the strength and ingenuity of the people solving them every day.

Education That Moves Beyond the Classroom

This is not a lecture series—it’s an immersive, hands-on field course. Whether you’re shadowing mobile clinics, participating in maternal health outreach, or engaging in community health education, you’ll be gaining practical skills that can’t be taught in textbooks. And yes, we offer CME and CE credits—but more importantly, we offer perspective, purpose, and renewed clarity about your role in global medicine.

Purpose-Driven Travel & Personal Growth

MedTreks Kenya is more than just a global health elective—it’s a journey that will shift the way you see your work and the world. Many of our participants describe the experience as transformative: a chance to reconnect with why they entered healthcare, to build meaningful friendships, and to explore a deeper sense of purpose. It’s the kind of experience that stays with you—long after you’ve returned home.
