Iceland is a country shaped by glaciers, volcanoes, geothermal waters, and constantly shifting light. Over 10 days, we’ll explore its most iconic regions with depth and intention. How? By kayaking through beautiful glacier lagoons, hiking volcanic valleys, snorkeling between tectonic plates, and soaking in natural hot springs after active days outside. With thoughtful hotels, carefully chosen meals, and a small group atmosphere, this MedTreks journey balances adventure with comfort. The goal is to experience the country with context, good pacing, and people you’ll really enjoy traveling with.

    Why Iceland with MedTreks?

Wild Landscapes — Experienced Up Close.

We don’t just view Iceland from bus windows. Our 10-day journey reflects a carefully designed itinerary for medical professionals, balancing active days with glacier hikes and waterfall views alongside restorative time in geothermal soaks and deluxe lodges.

Our Wilderness Medicine CME is woven into the itinerary, typically held during evening happy hour, allowing you to fully experience the tour during the day. Iceland rewards thoughtful planning: from glacier gear and dry suits for snorkeling to carbon-offset transfers and weather-based pivots, you get to focus on showing up while we handle the rest.

Our guide is a geologist deeply rooted in Icelandic landscapes and environmental history. Her background in micropaleontology and climate research brings context to everything you see, from glacial retreat to volcanic formations.

We can’t wait to share this place with you.

    Itinerary at a Glance

    Days 1–2

We begin the Iceland Hiking CME Adventure in Reykjavík with a guided city walk and curated food tour: an easy, welcoming start to the week. After our first informal CME session and a welcome cocktail, we head to sea to observe puffins along the rugged coastline. We explore the Reykjanes Peninsula, where tectonic plates meet, and unwind together in the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon. From the very beginning, the trip blends active exploration, thoughtful discussion, and the kind of connection that happens when like-minded professionals travel in a small group.

    Days 3–6

Along Iceland’s dramatic South Coast, the adventure deepens. We hike through steaming geothermal valleys, kayak among floating icebergs at Jökulsárlón, and walk black sand beaches. Then, we’ll strap on crampons for a guided glacier trek on Vatnajökull. Evenings include thoughtfully integrated CME sessions and shared meals, where conversations flow from clinical insights to the day’s most awe-inspiring moments. This helps everyone bond.

    Days 7–9

We venture by Super Jeep into the highlands of Þórsmörk, explore the Golden Circle’s waterfalls and geysers, and snorkel between tectonic plates at Þingvellir. This is a true bucket-list experience. Then, our final days include a rewarding hike to Glymur waterfall and a restorative soak in seaside geothermal baths before a celebratory farewell dinner in Reykjavík. Truly, it’s a week defined not just by extraordinary landscapes, but by shared learning, reflection, and the kind of camaraderie that lingers long after the journey ends on this Iceland Hiking CME Adventure.

    CME Course Info

    International Wilderness Life Support

For medical professionals participating in CME, our Iceland trip includes the option to complete International Wilderness Life Support (IWLS) Certification. This hybrid course combines self-paced online modules before the trip with practical, scenario-based learning during the expedition.

IWLS is designed for clinicians who want to feel more prepared to assess, treat, and make decisions in remote and resource-limited environments. This includes places where weather, distance, limited supplies, and delayed evacuation can shape patient care.

    Course topics include:

    • Patient assessment in austere environments

    • C-spine stabilization and patient movement

    • Hypothermia packaging and environmental illness

    • Wound care with limited resources

    • Splinting and orthopedic injury management

    • Ocean and water medicine

    • Travel medicine and global health principles

    • Wilderness medical kits and evacuation decision-making

    • Scenario-based simulations for certification

Participants may earn up to 28 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and/or 28 nursing contact hours through the IWLS course.

As with all MedTreks trips, the travel experience comes first. The CME component is available for those who want it and is designed to support the expedition experience without turning the trip into a traditional conference.
