People & Place

Why We Love This Place

We found paradise and we can’t wait to share it with you! Between the daily ocean activities, the gourmet South Pacific cuisine and the beautiful accommodations at our private island resort, this experience offers ample time for relaxation and we promise you won’t get bored!

Why Fiji? At its heart, Fiji’s culture is a rich mosaic, deeply rooted in the traditions of its indigenous Melanesian people, as well as influences from Polynesian, Indian, Chinese, and European settlers. This cultural tapestry is what sets Fiji apart from other island retreats, offering visitors an experience that is both exotic and profoundly human.

Fijian Way of Life (Bula Spirit): Central to the Fijian lifestyle is the “Bula Spirit” – a term that encompasses a friendly welcome, happiness, and good health. This ethos is palpable from the moment visitors step onto the island, with warm smiles and heartfelt “Bula!” greetings. More than a word, it’s an embodiment of the island’s approach to life, emphasizing community, respect, and the importance of relationships.

Beyond the stunning beaches and coral reefs, it’s the heartfelt connections with the people and their traditions that leave a lasting impression on those who visit. This blend of natural beauty, warm hospitality, and vibrant culture makes Fiji an unparalleled destination for those seeking a retreat that nourishes the soul as much as it delights the senses.

Paradise Cove Lodge

In the stunning Yasawa Islands of Fiji, you’ll find the 5-star resort tucked away in a picturesque cove on Naukacuvu Island. Surrounded by champagne sand and crystal-clear ocean waters, this paradise offers a luxurious retreat like no other. Enjoy the white sand beach, swim in one of the three pools in Paradise Cove Lodge, and savor delicious meals at the Lodge’s two bars and restaurants. All the bungalows and villas are furnished in typical Fijian style with handmade local furniture and beautiful open air bathrooms. Dive into the local culture, explore vibrant reefs, and snorkel with Giant Manta Rays. For the thrill-seekers, try big game fishing or dive into the wonders of the sea with the Cove’s PADI dive shop.

Fiji Food
Fiji Cuisine

The culinary landscape of Fiji reflects its cultural diversity, with Indian, Chinese, and traditional Pacific influences. From the abundant seafood to the rich flavors of coconut and tropical fruits, the local cuisine is a delight to explore. Signature dishes such as Kokoda, Fiji’s answer to ceviche, marinated in citrus and coconut cream, encapsulate the island’s love affair with the ocean, while the earthy sweetness of Taro and the rich, creamy texture of Cassava showcase the agricultural heritage of the islands. Indian influences weave through the culinary landscape as well, introducing spices and preparations that elevate dishes like curry and roti to local staples. Dining in Fiji is not just about sustenance; it’s an immersive experience that embodies the spirit of communal sharing and hospitality, inviting you to savor not just the food but the warmth and connection it brings.

Course Info

International Wilderness Life Support

For medical professionals participating in CME, our Fiji trip includes the option to complete International Wilderness Life Support (IWLS) Certification. This hybrid course combines self-paced online modules before the trip with practical, scenario-based learning during the expedition.

IWLS is designed for clinicians who want to feel more prepared to assess, treat, and make decisions in remote and resource-limited environments. This includes places where weather, distance, limited supplies, and delayed evacuation can shape patient care.

Course topics include:

• Patient assessment in austere environments

• C-spine stabilization and patient movement

• Hypothermia packaging and environmental illness

• Wound care with limited resources

• Splinting and orthopedic injury management

• Ocean and water medicine

• Travel medicine and global health principles

• Wilderness medical kits and evacuation decision-making

• Scenario-based simulations for certification

Participants may earn up to 28 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and/or 28 nursing contact hours through the IWLS course.

As with all MedTreks trips, the travel experience comes first. The CME component is available for those who want it and is designed to support the expedition experience without turning the trip into a traditional conference.

    Testimonials

“My family and I have been traveling for years with MedTreks. Each trip is a new experience and the perfect mix of education, adventure, gourmet food and beautiful cultural experiences. To be able to experience sustainable health care in rural Kenya, surfing and learning medical Spanish in Costa Rica, visiting Machu Picchu with the sunrise, or whitewater rafting and learning wilderness medicine each trip has created beautiful memories and leaves me ready to sign up for the next adventure. I have yet to find a company that understands sustainable health care and can balance adventure sports with great food and cultural experiences. We look forward to every journey with Ari and MedTreks” –
