International Wilderness Life Support

Medicine Beyond the Hospital Walls

The International Wilderness Life Support (IWLS) Course is MedTreks International’s signature wilderness and austere medicine training designed for healthcare professionals who want to feel more confident practicing medicine beyond traditional clinical settings.

Whether you are traveling internationally, volunteering in global health, guiding outdoor adventures, or simply spending more time in remote environments, IWLS provides practical, hands-on skills for caring for patients when resources are limited and conditions are unpredictable.

Built by clinicians with real-world field experience, the course blends evidence-based wilderness medicine education with immersive, scenario-driven learning that prepares participants to think critically, adapt, and lead in challenging environments.

Participants earn up to 28 AMA PRA Category 1 CME™ credits and Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM™) credits through the Wilderness Medical Society.

What You Will Learn

Real-World, Hands-On Learning

IWLS is designed to move far beyond a traditional classroom experience. Participants spend time actively practicing the kinds of skills and decision-making that wilderness and austere environments demand — from spine stabilization on uneven terrain and hypothermia management to wound care, orthopedic injuries, improvised solutions, and patient evacuations. The goal is not simply to memorize information, but to build confidence through experience.

Designed for Remote & Resource-Limited Settings

Whether you are caring for patients on a mountain trail, during international travel, in rural communities, or in global health environments, IWLS focuses on practical medicine when resources, personnel, and evacuation options may be limited. The course emphasizes adaptability, critical thinking, and learning how to provide thoughtful care outside of ideal clinical conditions.

Evidence-Based Wilderness Medicine Education

Our curriculum is grounded in current wilderness medicine standards and informed by the latest best practices in the field, including educational principles supported by the Wilderness Medical Society. We are committed to delivering education that is both practical and academically strong.

A Meaningful Community of Healthcare Professionals

One of the most memorable parts of the IWLS experience is the people you meet along the way. Participants train alongside healthcare professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds who share a common interest in adventure, medicine, and lifelong learning. Many return year after year — not only to continue building skills, but because of the friendships, conversations, and sense of community that develop throughout the course.

Message from Ari - MedTreks CEO

Hi friends, welcome. We’re so glad you’re here.

When people hear “wilderness medicine,” they often picture epic expeditions and remote landscapes. And while those places are part of the story, wilderness medicine is really about something deeper: adaptability, creativity, humility, and caring for others when the plan changes and the right answer isn’t obvious.

My hope is that through this course, you gain not only practical skills, but perspective – feeling more prepared for expeditions, emergencies, and the moments when your presence, judgment, and compassion matter most. We are excited to have you join us! ~Ari Rasori, RN, NP
