The Galápagos Is Not a Beach Vacation, and That’s What Makes It So Special

Post-Thmbnail

A note from Anna, MedTreks Marketing Director, based in Ecuador on our Galápagos Private Yacht Cruise CME

When people think of islands, they often imagine long beach days, palm trees and coconuts, and a place to simply relax in the sun. The Galápagos Islands in the Pacific are different.

I grew up in Ecuador, and even here, the Galápagos have always felt like one of the country’s most distinct places. They are not just beautiful because of the water or the wildlife. They are beautiful because they feel alive in a way that is hard to describe until you are there.

The islands are raw, volcanic, and constantly shaped by ocean currents, wind, sun, and time. You walk across lava fields and snorkel in cool, nutrient-rich water while baby sharks swim below you. Along the shoreline, marine iguanas sun themselves on black rock while blue-footed boobies pose for you to admire and photograph. Sea turtles glide past your GoPro, and giant tortoises move slowly through the highlands.

It doesn’t feel like you’re just observing nature… it actually feels like you are part of the environment! And that is so magical.

You are seeing evolution, geology, wildlife behavior, and conservation all in one place. Every island has its own character. One day might include snorkeling with sea lions or spotting a hammerhead. Another might include hiking across volcanic terrain, kayaking while watching seabirds, or listening to a naturalist guide explain why certain species exist here and almost nowhere else.

For MedTreks, the Galápagos Islands are a natural fit because the trip is active, educational, very well preserved and so authentic.

Our 2026 Galápagos CME Private Yacht Cruise begins with two nights in Quito, Ecuador’s capital city at 9,350 feet, including time to explore the city, taste Ecuadorian chocolate, and experience a bit of the highlands before flying to the islands. From there, the group boards the EcoGalaxy, a 16-passenger catamaran reserved for MedTreks.

That part matters, a lot. Traveling by small yacht changes the experience. Instead of staying in one place and taking day trips, you move through the islands by water. So, you’re constantly waking up near new landscapes, visitor sites, and wildlife habitats. The smaller group also keeps the experience personal, with more time with the naturalist guide and a quieter life onboard.

Loved ones and non-medical guests are welcome. The trip is designed as a vacation first, with CME available for medical professionals who want it through our International Wilderness Life Support certification.

Even with full days of snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, and wildlife viewing, the Galápagos invite you to slow down and pay attention. You start to notice the small things: how a bird moves, how the ocean changes color, how volcanic rock holds heat. You also notice how close wildlife can be when it has evolved without the same fear of humans.

Some guests bring cameras. Others bring journals or small painting kits. Either way, the islands ask you to look closely!

For me, that is what makes the Galápagos stay with you. Click here to learn more!
