Norway in a Nutshell — 9 Surprises in 9 Days
Welcome to our MedTreks Norway Travel Highlights blog post! When I think of Norway, my mind instantly goes to images of fjords, dramatic peaks, and colorful fishing villages perched on the edge of the sea. While I knew this place would be beautiful, I didn’t expect all the little details that made this country so incredible.
Here are a few things that surprised and delighted me during my time there. If Norway sparks your interest, I highly recommend checking this stunning place out!
The Fjords Really Do Take Your Breath Away
The rumors are true: the fjords are spectacular. Photos hardly do them justice. Standing in their presence is humbling — mountains rise straight out of the ocean, some shrouded in mist, others sparkling under a patch of sun. Tiny fishing villages cling to the shoreline (or halfway up a mountain slope!), and every bend reveals an entirely new scene.
Midnight Sunlight That Plays Tricks on Time
In Norway during summer, time bends. At 11 p.m., instead of winding down, I found myself hiking ridgelines or strolling through coastal towns in soft golden light. It feels like Norway gives you an extra adventure every single day.
Hiking Trails with Zero Crowds
Unlike more saturated destinations, Norway’s wilderness feels wide open. You can hike for hours and meet only a handful of people — or none at all. Trails lead to roaring waterfalls, hidden valleys, alpine lakes, and ridgelines that stretch into infinity. The solitude itself is part of the magic.
Norway’s Public Transit is a Traveler’s Dream
For a country with such rugged terrain, getting around is seamless. Ferries connect fjords, trains wind past glaciers and mountain meadows, and buses reach even the tiniest towns. It’s one of the few places I have been where public transportation doubles as an adventure in itself.
Outdoor Culture is a Way of Life
Norwegians don’t wait for sunny skies to go outside — they simply go. Rain or shine, you’ll see families hiking, kids swimming in fjords, and people biking to work. The philosophy of friluftsliv (“open-air living”) is woven into everyday life, and it’s contagious.
Weather That Keeps You on Your Toes
One moment you’re basking in sunshine, the next you’re pulling on a rain jacket and wool hat. Norway delivers all four seasons in a single day. Instead of being a hassle, it becomes part of the adventure — a reminder to pack layers and embrace the unpredictability of true wilderness trave
The Price of a Beer (or Wine) Might Shock You
Norway’s alcohol prices are some of the highest in Europe — a pint can run $12–15 USD, and a basic bottle of wine up to $80. High taxes are designed as public health measures and to support social programs. Locals adapt by making drinks a special, savored treat rather than an everyday habit.
Sauna Culture is Alive and Well
Floating sauna on the ocean? Yes, please. Like their Finnish neighbors, Norwegians embrace sauna culture. You’ll find wood-fired saunas perched along fjords, often with a ladder that drops you directly into icy waters.
Sustainability is a National Value
From electric ferries to widespread recycling programs and a staggering number of EVs, Norway takes sustainability seriously. Traveling here gives you a glimpse of what it looks like when a nation is deeply committed to protecting its natural beauty.
When I first booked my ticket to Norway, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. Nine days in this country left me wanting more. Norway is exactly the kind of destination that fits the MedTreks spirit: active, great food options, beautiful accommodations and pristine wilderness that will take your breath away.
