Morocco Unveiled: A Q&A Guide to One of Our Favorite Cultural Adventures
Morocco Travel FAQ for Healthcare Professionals
Planning a trip to Morocco? This travel FAQ for healthcare professionals covers everything from ancient cities and sweeping deserts to safety tips and cultural insights.
With ancient cities, soaring mountains, sweeping deserts, and welcoming people, Morocco is a destination that offers so much but often has many questions from curious travelers. After leading several trips through Morocco, we’ve compiled some of your most frequently asked questions—from safety to souks to sharing tea with Berber nomads.
Is Morocco a safe destination for travelers—especially women and healthcare professionals?
Yes! Morocco has historically been a very safe place to travel. It has been politically stable and with our guided groups it is especially welcoming to women, families and solo travelers. Like any destination, it’s important to be respectful of cultural norms (especially around dress and behavior), but in our experience, locals are friendly, curious, and proud to share their culture. Our trips are guided by professional local teams who are with us every step of the way, helping navigate both logistics and language. And as always, we travel with cultural humility and in small groups, allowing for more meaningful (and safer) connections.
How’s the food in Morocco?
In a word: delicious. Moroccan cuisine is rich with spices and slow-cooked flavors. Think stewed veggies in tagines, fresh mint tea, warm bread with olive oil, dates and nuts, and grilled meats. Vegetarians are well cared for, and most dietary needs can be accommodated. On MedTreks trips, we enjoy a mix of street food sampling while wandering the markets, a few local meals (a highlight of the trip!), and elegant dining experiences—like dinner under the stars in the Sahara.
What is Fez like? Why does MedTreks include this city in their tour?
Fez is a living museum. It’s home to the world’s oldest university and the largest medina (old city) in the world. Getting “lost” in Fez is half the fun—narrow alleys wind past centuries-old tanneries, colorful stalls of woven textiles, and mosques echoing with the call to prayer. It’s one of our favorite stops for diving deep into Morocco’s layered history, with a local guide helping us uncover hidden gems behind unmarked doors – and helping us return home to our cozy riad hotel nestled within the city walls!
Can you hike in the Atlas Mountains?
Absolutely! And it’s incredible. On our MedTreks Morocco trip, we spend two days hiking through the High Atlas Mountains—walking through cedar forrests, terraced fields, sheep herders and nomadic Berber. The air is crisp, the landscape rugged, and the views incredible. Midway through our trek, we’re invited into a traditional Berber home for a slow-cooked lunch and warm mint tea. It’s one of the most meaningful parts of the journey—not something many tourists get to experience.
What’s it like to stay in a luxury tent in the Sahara Desert?
Imagine this: you load up into 4×4 vehicles and drive 45 minutes over sand dunes until you arrive at a peaceful tented camp in the middle of the Sahara desert. You are greeted with mint tea and a fresh towel before you enter your private tent—complete with soft rugs, a cozy bed, and ensuite bathroom.
After a short rest, you are invited out to meet your camel and ride out into the sunset over the golden dunes. It is one of the most magical experiences in travel. After you return, you gather for a beverage around a fire under the stars before heading into a delicious, multi-course dinner with live music. It’s peaceful, magical, and surprisingly luxurious. The desert has a way of simplifying everything—and it often ends up being a highlight of the trip.
What can I expect exploring the souks of Marrakesh?
Prepare to be dazzled. Indeed, the souks of Marrakesh are a kaleidoscope of color, scent, and sound—leather slippers, hand-woven carpets, piles of spices, silver teapots, and glowing lanterns. To make the most of it, we explore these markets with local guides. They help us decode the art of bargaining and ensure authentic, ethical purchases. After the hustle, we retreat to our peaceful riad (traditional Moroccan guesthouse) for mint tea and some rooftop relaxation.
Is it worth visiting the coastal town of Essaouira?
100%. Essaouira is the perfect exhale at the end of your Moroccan journey. This laid-back Atlantic town has whitewashed walls, sea breeze, art galleries, and fresh seafood straight off the boat. It’s an easy place to wander and relax… with fewer crowds and a slower pace than Marrakesh. Think: sunset walks on the beach, browsing artisan cooperatives, and soaking in the salty air.
