Why Peruvian Cuisine is Among the Best in the World
Hi there! Anna here, MedTreks Marketing Director. Today, I want to share with you a little bit about Why Peruvian Cuisine is Among the Best in the World. When I think about some of the best restaurants I’ve tried in NYC, Miami, and Quito, Peruvian food is always on the list. I’ll link the places I’ve visited below.
Why is it so good?
Well, apart from my fantastic experiences, I did some research:
First of all, according to the Michelin Guide, it’s due to a fusion of many cultures, bringing diversity and originality. Peruvian food is a blend of traditional Andean indigenous ingredients and cooking techniques. It’s mixed with the influences of immigrants from Spain, Asia, Africa, and even Italy.
For example, one of their most famous dishes (and my personal favorite), “lomo saltado”, is a combination of traditional Peruvian flavors with Chinese stir-fry techniques. The result? A delicious dish of rice, french fries, stir-fried beef with onions and tomatoes: a perfect mix of cultures in one plate!!
Strategic Location
Did you know there are over 3,000 types of potatoes in Peru? This incredible diversity in ingredients reflects the country’s long history of agricultural expertise, which plays a huge role in the quality of the food. But that’s just the beginning of Why Peruvian Cuisine is Among the Best in the World.
According to Eat Peru, Peru owes much of its culinary richness to its varied microclimates and geographical regions. The Andean region, with its rich soil at high altitudes, is ideal for cultivating potatoes, quinoa, and other tubers. To the east, the Amazon region contributes fruits and herbs, while the coast on the west offers an abundance of fresh seafood. These diverse ingredients result in a wide range of flavors and textures in Peruvian dishes.
Some must-try dishes, according to National Geographic, include ceviche, which differs from the version served in Mexico or other countries. It’s raw fish marinated in citrus juices, typically served with sweet potato, corn, and cilantro. Another classic is aji de gallina, a creamy chicken stew made with yellow chili peppers, cheese, and nuts, served over rice. It’s a beloved home-cooked meal staple. You’ll also find alpaca and guinea pig, or “cuy,” on the menu, which are common meats in Peruvian cuisine.
These dishes are so well known around the world that, in 2023, CNN named a restaurant in Lima the best in the world.

My recommendations
Peruvian cuisine is celebrated globally for its rich flavors, diverse ingredients, and cultural significance. Here are a few places I’ve visited and can confidently recommend for trying Peruvian food:
- In Quito: La Gloria Restaurante, Maqya Sabor Peruano by Mar y Luna
- In Miami: Ceviche 105
- In Chicago: Tanta Chicago
I hope this gives you a taste of why Peruvian cuisine is considered some of the best in the world! But there’s more after learning Why Peruvian Cuisine is Among the Best in the World… it’s about the entire Peruvian adventure:
