What to Love About Quito, Ecuador: South America’s Light

Post-Thmbnail

What to Love About Quito, Ecuador (South America’s Light): We just spent a few days in Quito gearing up for back-to-back Galápagos trips, and we couldn’t wait to share more about this beautiful city! What better way to introduce you to Quito than through the eyes of our Marketing Director, Anna, who was born and raised here?

Anna, who will also be leading some of our Medical Spanish Bootcamps in incredible destinations around the world, is excited to share why she loves Quito so much. Here’s why:

“Quito, Ecuador, affectionately known as “La Luz de América” (South America’s Light), holds a special place in my heart. Having grown up here, I’ve come to appreciate all that this colorful city in the Andes has to offer. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history aficionado, or someone looking to immerse yourself in a rich culture, Quito has something for everyone. Here are the reasons why I absolutely love this city”:

1. The Weather: A Perfect Mountain Climate

One of the things I love most about Quito is the weather. Located high in the Andes at 2,850 meters (9,350 feet), the city enjoys a perfect blend of crisp, dry mountain air paired with intense sunshine. While the mornings can feel chilly, by midday, the sun warms up the city, making it feel inviting. However, Quito’s weather can be unpredictable… a thunderstorm may surprise you in the afternoon, only for the sun to peek through again before it disappears behind Pichincha volcano. This climate is why sun hoodies are my go-to wardrobe choice for outdoor activities, they’re light enough to wear comfortably, yet perfect for when the weather shifts unexpectedly.

2. The Stunning Mountains Surrounding the City

Quito is set in a valley surrounded by beautiful mountains. To the west, the Cordillera Occidental stretches out, and to the east, the Cordillera Oriental offers a stunning backdrop. What makes Quito especially magical is that everywhere you look, you see a peak or active volcano, like Cotopaxi or Guagua Pichincha, an active volcano that literally overlooks the city. There’s something about being able to look out so far that gives me a huge sense of freedom!

3. The Rich Culture and History

Quito is a city full of history. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Quito’s colonial architecture and charming old town showcase the rich history of Ecuador. Walking through Quito’s Historic Center feels like stepping back in time, but the city continues to embrace modernity while preserving its deeply-rooted traditions. 4. Pichincha: The Active Volcano Right Overhead

One of Quito’s unique features is its proximity to Pichincha, an active volcano towering above the city. Guagua Pichincha is it’s active crater, with Ruco Pichincha Summit to the north and Padre Encantado Summit in the center. Just a 30-minute drive from the city, the Teleferiqo cable car takes you up to 12,949 feet, offering stunning views of Quito and the surrounding Andes. For adventure seekers, you can hike to the summit, but make sure to have the necessary gear and watch out for lightning!

5. Outdoor Adventures: A Playground for Nature Lovers

One thing I appreciate most about Quito is how close it is to everything. Whether you’re looking to explore the Amazon jungle, wander through the cloud forest, or hit the beach on the Pacific coast, everything, including hundreds of hikes, are just a short road trip away. Papallacta Hot Springs, only an hour from the city, offer a peaceful retreat surrounded by the stunning Andes, perfect for relaxation after a day of hiking. The Mindo Cloud Forest is another nearby escape, ideal for world class bird watching, hiking, and a chocolate tour at the local Quetzal factory. 6. The Food: A Flavorful Journey

Quito is a foodie’s paradise, offering everything from traditional Ecuadorian dishes to international flavors. I love the fresh, seasonal ingredients that fill the markets throughout the city. Whether it’s a blackberry juice (my personal favorite) or a local ceviche, Quito never disappoints. Three places we ate at and loved are: Somos, República del Cacao, and Casa Gangotena.

7. Full of Surprises

Life in Quito is full of surprises… sometimes frustrating, but always exciting. Although the city seems to work backwards at times, Quito’s energy is truly unique. You never really know what you’re going to find or experience, and that’s also something that makes the city so special.

8. The Galápagos Islands: Quito’s Gem

Let’s not forget about the Galápagos Islands, just a short flight from Quito. The true jewel of Ecuador, these islands are full of unique wildlife and the most beautiful landscapes. While Quito offers mountains, culture, and history, the Galápagos are a living laboratory! It seems like all of Ecuador is South America’s light!)

These are just a few of the things to love about Quito, Ecuador (South America’s Light). I hope you get the chance to experience them for yourself when you visit Quito.
