Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals: Fireside Chat with Heidi Bourne

Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals:

Tonight we hosted our 4th online fireside chat from our 5 week series. Tonight’s topic: Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals, with Heidi Bourne from Pacific Mindfulness.

I was especially excited about this online fireside chat because it speaks directly to a growing need among healthcare professionals. Over the past decade, MedTreks has offered a variety of retreats—river rafting, hiking, yoga—and I’ve consistently seen how much healthcare providers crave practical tools to help shift their mood, mindset, and perspective. They’re looking for something they can rely on both during their demanding workdays and after a grueling shift at the clinic or hospital. Time and again, research points to one profoundly simple yet transformative tool: mindfulness.

As someone who has worked in Emergency Medicine for the past 10 years, I’ve come to see mindfulness as an incredibly accessible and powerful resource—yet it’s often underestimated or overlooked. Many healthcare professionals don’t realize how profoundly this simple practice can improve their resilience, focus, and overall well-being in both their professional and personal lives.

Next year we are excited to be hosting our first ever, Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals – retreat in the heart of the California wine country, with Heidi Bourne. I asked Heidi to chat tonight because not only does she have so much wisdom and experience teaching mindfulness, she is very approachable and thoughtful. I love this about her. She has a very caring presence and is also grounded and curious.

Heidi shared that her first career was as a nurse, so she understands first-hand, the stressors of being in the healthcare field. Heidi has been teaching mindfulness since 2005 and continues to host workshops, webinars and retreats all over the country – and she shared tonight that her passion is bringing mindfulness to the healthcare community. Her background in healthcare and science also gives her a very important perspective to the benefits of mindfulness and meditation, particular for the medical community and our Mindfulness Retreats for Healthcare Professionals.

We have the full recording available for download but I will share are two key takeaways from my chat with her tonight:

How can mindfulness benefit healthcare workers:

Mindfulness is incredibly important for healthcare workers because the nature of their profession often involves high levels of stress and vicarious trauma. Our jobs are not only demanding, but the stakes are high. Caring for patients with varying degrees of illness creates a persistent sense of urgency, which can upregulate the nervous system. When stakes are consistently high, the body remains in a heightened state of fight, flight, or freeze, leading to chronic physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. Over time, the nervous system adapts to this constant state of alertness, making it challenging to unwind, feel grounded, or find a steady pace. Mindfulness offers tools to counterbalance this stress by helping healthcare professionals regulate their nervous systems, fostering a sense of calm, focus, and resilience in the face of intense healthcare demands.

What are the benefits to being on a mindfulness retreat?

The retreat provides a rare chance to let go of decision-making and daily demands. Everything is taken care of for you: nourishing meals, comfortable accommodations, and a thoughtfully curated schedule. All you have to do is show up. Your hardest decision on retreat might be which pair of socks to wear. Because the schedule is provided and the guidance is there, this kind of support opens an avenue for true rest, refuge, renewal. The whole body, mind, body system regulates. There are no demands. It is really a time of quiet reflection but also a time to learn how to move gracefully within the world, finding balance and being able to operate from a place of steadiness.

Retreats help to build momentum for a mindfulness foundation, a routine that people will be able to take back and integrate into their daily lives.

It is a simple, easy and approachable practice – especially with a seasoned instructor, which is why we are so excited to have Heidi join us as the co-host for our Mindfulness Retreat next October!

We hope you can join us.

We will be sharing more about Mindfulness, our Mindfulness Retreat for Healthcare Professionals, and some tools and opportunities in the future over the next few months!
