Quito, Ecuador: Outdoor Activities and Dining Experiences

Post-Thmbnail

Hi, it’s Anna! I’m MedTreks’ new Marketing Director, and I’m excited to share some local secrets from Quito, Ecuador, my hometown. Holding dual citizenship in the US and Ecuador, I’ve spent years in both countries, but Quito has my heart. There’s always something amazing to do here… it’s an underrated paradise!

I often find myself showing friends and family around, offering insider tips that only a local would know. Now, I’m here to help you discover the best spots to eat and the coolest things to do in Quito. Therefore, here are my top choices for things to do and eat in Quito:

Quito, Ecuador: Dining Experiences

Quito isn’t just the capital of Ecuador; it’s also a culinary haven catering to various tastes, from traditional Ecuadorian dishes to international cuisine. Here are some top picks in and outside the city that I recommend you try:

In the city:

  • Sushi at Noé: I’ve been to many countries, and I have NEVER tried sushi like this. It’s a favorite for both locals and visitors. Every time my aunt and uncle visit from Chicago, it’s the first place we go! I’ve also celebrated several birthdays here.
  • Asian Flavors at Banh Mi: If you’re craving Vietnamese sandwiches or other Asian delights, this is the spot. Be sure to try their Kimchi Fries and Pad Thai… they’re to die for!
  • Traditional eats at Somos Restaurant: A MUST during your visit. Experience the rich flavors of Ecuador here. It’s perfect for first-timers wanting authentic local dishes. Plus, their little gift shop offers beautiful ceramic pieces and more!
  • Cebiches de la Rumiñahui: No trip to Ecuador is complete without trying ceviche. This place gets it right every time, especially the shrimp ceviche or “Ceviche de camarón,” a classic.
  • Peruvian ceviche at La Gloria: La Gloria Restaurant will make you SO happy with their Peruvian ceviche and their lomo saltado!! It’s quite different from Ecuadorian ceviche.

Outskirts of the city:

  • Açaí Bowls at La Playa: I’ve never tasted an açai bowl quite like this. Choose from different types topped with peanut butter, honey, mint leaves, berries, bananas—super fresh, healthy, and refreshing. They also have an amazing spinach waffle topped with acai ice cream.
  • Brunch at La Casa de Rafa: An all-you-can-eat experience on the side of Ilaló volcano surrounded by trees up a cobblestone road. Imagine fresh local fruit, juices, granola, an amazing selection of cheeses (the owner is Swiss), fresh bread, eggs, pancakes, and more!
  • Local ice cream at Heladería 1896: Discover traditional fruit-flavored ice creams at Heladería 1896, a place rich in history where the recipes date back to Rosalía Suárez in the 70s. My favorite two-scoop flavor combo: blackberry (“mora”) and coconut (“coco”).
  • Family Dining at Bogo Pizza: Sometimes, nothing beats a good pizza, and Bogo delivers with an amazing sourdough crust, a very friendly chef who is also the owner, and some creative toppings alongside classic choices. They also offer plenty of outdoor games for kids. My favorite is the “Emily,” a white pizza with truffle infused oil and pistachios.
  • Healthy Options at Mamey: For those who prefer a healthier dining option, family-owned Mamey offers delicious, nutritious breakfast and lunch full of flavor. They also have a tiny shop full of organic goods!
  • Burgers at Datu Deli: Often claimed as the best burger in town. It’s a great spot with some of the best coffee, a gourmet market to shop around in, and actual coconuts with refreshing coconut water to unwind after a day of exploring.
  • Empanadas Chilenas: Perfect for grabbing a quick and ridiculously tasty bite while heading to La Mitad del Mundo. My favorites are the cheese empanada (“empanada de viento”) and the chicken empanada (“empanada de pollo”). Their breakfast options are also amazing!

Each of these places offers something unique, giving you a taste of the local culture through its diverse culinary scene. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack or a fancy meal, Quito has you covered with these fantastic options.

Quito, Ecuador: Outdoor Activities

Quito is a city that blends history, culture, and adventure seamlessly, offering something for everyone. Here are some activities that showcase the best of what Quito has to offer:

In the city:

  • Stroll through Quito’s Historic Center: Walk around and admire the well-preserved colonial architecture, bustling plazas, and vibrant street life. Furthermore, don’t miss the iconic churches and museums that tell the rich history of the city.
  • Shopping at El Mercado Artesanal: Perfect for picking up unique handmade souvenirs and crafts. It’s a more local alternative to the more touristy Otavalo market.
  • TelefériQo city views: Take a ride on this aerial lift and see Quito from the lookout above at 12,943ft.
  • Hike up Ruco Pichincha: Accessible by the TelefériQo, this hike offers adventurous trails and spectacular views over the volcanic landscape. It’s a great way to challenge yourself physically while taking in the natural beauty. Keep in mind the weather tends to turn here in the Andes in the afternoon, and you don’t want to get caught in an electric storm.
  • Running and biking: For those who love staying active, run along the trails of El Chaquiñán or explore Parque Metropolitano. Alternatively, rent a bike at Cotopaxi Bike Park for some thrilling cross country and downhill rides. They have trails for kids too!

Outskirts of the city:

  • Papallacta Hot Springs: Just a short drive from Quito, these natural volcanic hot springs are the perfect getaway for relaxation and rejuvenation. Surrounded by the beauty of the Andes, it’s an ideal spot for a peaceful retreat.
  • Climbing at El Muro: Test your climbing skills at this indoor gym. Suitable for kids, beginners and seasoned climbers, it offers a variety of routes and challenges for lead climbing and bouldering.
  • Sunrise from Ilaló: For early risers, a hike up Ilaló mountain offers a serene spot to watch the sunrise over the valleys and mountains surrounding Quito.
  • Mindo Cloud Forest: A bit further afield, the Mindo cloud forest offers an escape into nature with opportunities for bird watching, hiking to waterfalls, and even a chocolate tour at a local factory called Quetzal. For a luxurious stay, check out Mashpi Lodge.
