9 Reasons to Visit the Galápagos Islands

Hi! I’m Anna, the new Marketing Director and Content Creator at MedTreks. The Galápagos Islands are very special to me, as I was born and raised in Ecuador. With closer access to my favorite place on Earth, I’ve been able to visit these special islands multiple times, learning to love and appreciate them so much.

Located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, right on the equator, these islands are not just a UNESCO world heritage site but a total magnet for nature lovers. Here are nine reasons why I highly suggest everyone visit the Galápagos Islands, no matter what your age, profession or passions are.

Blue Footed Boobies at Galapagos CME Tour

#1 Crazy Biodiversity

There are species that can only be found in the Galápagos Islands, and nowhere else on Earth! From the marine iguanas, to the blue-footed boobies, playful sea lions, and giant tortoises, you will fall in love with the variety of wildlife from the moment you get off the airplane, as the animals aren’t shy at all. On some islands, be careful not to step on sea lions as you walk along the boardwalks! They might even be laying on the bench you had planned to sit on.

#2 Volcanic Origins

The complex of over 100 islands are of volcanic origin, formed from underwater volcanoes millions of years ago. This has created interesting landscapes with rugged and beautiful formations. This is also why there are special black and red sand beaches on some islands, colored by iron oxidation and volcanic minerals! You’ll also see interesting features such as lava tunnels and uplifted marine plateaus. It may be really tempting to take a rock or two back home, but there’s strict protection rules on these islands, more on that later.

#3 Charles Darwin’s Living Lab

This was where Charles Darwin found the inspiration for his theory of natural selection in 1835. The islands’ unique species and their adaptations to this very isolated environment helped shape Darwin’s ideas about evolution, making the Galápagos one of the most important locations in the history of scientific thought.

Fun fact: Charles Darwin was influenced by Alexander Von Humboldt, who wrote one of my favorite books ever, “The Invention of Nature.” Read it to gain a deeper understanding of how interconnected our world is, and to appreciate the deep influence of nature on scientific discovery!

#4 Diving Haven

Galápagos is known as one of the world’s top diving destinations. I can testify to that, as I was lucky to obtain my PADI Open Water Diver’s License there in late 2020. I experienced the most vibrant marine life, with hammerhead and white-tip sharks swimming above and below me! And that’s just a sneak peek of all the species you can see. The island’s unique underwater topography also attracts sea turtles, marine iguanas, manta rays, parrotfish and red-lipped batfish. For whale shark sightings, visit Darwin Island from June to November, or head to Wolf Island for more hammerheads. That’s an experience I’m eager to have in the Galápagos!

#5 Conservation Efforts

The ecosystems here are fragile, facing threats ranging from invasive species and illnesses to climate change. The Galápagos National Park and many, many NGOs enforce strict regulations to protect this delicate natural heritage, ensuring that the islands remain a safe place for their fauna. Everything from your bags to the soles of your shoes will be checked to make sure you’re not taking any plants, rocks, shells or animals with you, as well as to make sure you’re not bringing any seeds or new species in.

#6 The Galápagos Tortoise

Meet the iconic Galápagos tortoise, including the legendary Lonesome George. I had the privilege of meeting him back in 2010 when I camped on a few islands as an 8th grader!! Although he has since passed away, his legacy continues to inspire conservation efforts aimed at preserving and increasing the population of these creatures. If you never heard of Lonesome George, he was known not just for being the last of the Pinta Island tortoises, but also for his impressive size! He weighed about 165 pounds, and had a shell length of over 5 feet. His species was famous for their longevity and the role it played in evolution. #7 Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Did you know there are penguins on the equator? The Galápagos penguin is the only penguin species that calls the northern hemisphere home – along with other amazing birds like the flightless cormorant and frigatebirds. Who’d pass up an opportunity to see these species up close in their natural habitats?

#8 The Galápagos National Park

The establishment of the Galápagos National Park in 1959 has played a crucial role in the islands’ environmental protection, managing human activity and overseeing scientific research to maintain the health of the ecosystems. The park actually covers more than 97% of the archipelago’s land area, protecting so many endemic species from extinction and serving as a critical site for ecological studies. Its successful management strategies have set a benchmark in ecological preservation, inspiring similar initiatives globally.

#9 Quito Extension

We’re excited to offer a Quito extension before and/or after our trips to the Galápagos. As another UNESCO World Heritage site, Quito, the capital city of Ecuador has a well-preserved historic center, rich with the art and architecture of the Baroque School of Quito. Join us to explore old churches, spot volcanoes, savor food with Andean flair, and then set off for the Galápagos.
