Last week was Nurses Week – here is how we celebrated!
Highlighting the Incredible Nurses on Our Team!
First of all, we want to highlight two of the awesome nurses on our core faculty who were out instructing our MedTreks courses these past few weeks!
Sheryl Olson: It was an easy decision to kick this week off by highlighting one of our favorite faculty, one of our favorite nurses, and one of favorite humans- Sheryl Olson. If you have been on a MedTreks trip with Sheryl, you have been lucky to experience her zest for life, her passion for teaching, and her endless experiences in the outdoors and Wilderness Medicine. A mentor to all of us at MedTreks, we are so lucky to have her wisdom and expertise on our team. If you are joining us on one of our river trips or the Global Medicine Seminar this year…you get the privilege of learning and laughing alongside Sheryl as she shares stories from her career as a flight nurse and wilderness medicine instructor.
Angie Hanchett: A mother, a nurse, a lifeguard, an educator, a yoga instructor, a surf coach and an all around incredible human and friend.. this awesome RN is the master of making life fun and graceful, while wearing many different hats! On our Costa Rica retreat – you can find Angie leading a sunrise group to the sea turtles, teaching an ocean medicine CME lecture, followed giving group surf instruction, swim lessons, and then ending the day with a peaceful yin yoga class under candlelight.
Nursing Students in Global Medicine
We were excited to have a small group of nursing students from Southern Oregon University join us at our first Global Medicine Seminar in Ashland, Oregon last week. We are dedicated to offering more and more of these experiences to students. This particular group showed up enthusiastically ready to learn – they asked great questions and joined in on the workshops and discussions.
Below are some of the feedback from these awesome nursing students:
“This course benefited nursing students the most through the contagious inspiration and motivation spread. It was a refreshing weekend that opened all of our eyes to all of the possibilities in nursing and beyond. In addition, it was an amazing networking opportunity. We all left feeling so much more energized about our decision to go into healthcare than we came into the weekend with…With the knowledge I obtained from the weekend, I want to bring my nursing skills globally to help those in need. I will be able to pick ethical organizations that are actually helping communities. In addition, I would love to get involved in some wilderness nursing, however that may look. I have also gained knowledge that will help me in my career, such as dealing with extreme adventure injuries. Finally, I hope to join more MedTreks adventures/trips in the future, and always continue my education”
“Attending a wilderness and global health conference can be a transformative experience for your nursing career and future aspirations. As a nurse, your role extends beyond the confines of traditional healthcare settings, especially in the realm of wilderness and global health. These conferences offer a unique opportunity to learn about diverse healthcare challenges, cultural nuances, and innovative solutions from experts across the globe. Engaging in discussions and workshops can broaden your perspective, deepen your understanding of public health issues, and sharpen your critical thinking skills. Moreover, networking with professionals and organizations involved in wilderness and global health initiatives can open doors to new career pathways, international collaborations, and volunteer opportunities. By immersing yourself in this interdisciplinary environment, you’ll not only enhance your clinical knowledge but also develop invaluable skills in cross-cultural communication, adaptability, and problem-solving—attributes essential for navigating the complexities of healthcare in diverse settings. Ultimately, the insights gained from such conferences will not only enrich your nursing practice but also empower you to make meaningful contributions to improving healthcare outcomes on a global scale, fulfilling both your professional aspirations and your commitment to serving communities worldwide”
We love having Nurses and Nursing Students on our MedTreks Adventures!
Happy Nurses Week Friends and thank you for all that you do!
