Kenya: Top 10 Best Places to Visit

Visiting Kenya is an unforgettable experience. With vast deserts, incredible wildlife, and a spectacular savannah, you will never forget these beautiful landscapes. Plus, you will meet amazing people and visit unexpected places including a spectacular coastline where you can see dolphins! MedTreks runs trips to Kenya twice a year and we love this country so much we thought we would share some of our favorite places to visit!

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Right on the border with Tanzania is Maasai Mara National Reserve. It is known as one of the most beautiful reserves in the country and it’s the home of the Maasai people, who take care of many of the animals in this reserve.

The Great Migration takes place in this area. It usually happens during the months of July and August when wildebeests and zebras head to the Serengeti river. While not all animals make it there due to the long distances and predators, it is a beautiful sight.

The Mara River is an especially beautiful place where animals like cheetahs, lions, and hippos can be found roaming around.

Mount Kenya

The second highest mountain in Africa is located in Kenya. It is believed that the name of the country stems from the name of this impressive mountain! Mt. Kenya is an extinct volcano that now provides water to more than two million people.

It’s covered in beautiful vegetation including bamboo and it has become an ideal hiking destination for many people.

Amboseli National Park

While this park is a lot smaller than some national reserves, it has very important advantages that make it a great spot to visit. You can get super close to elephants here, which is an unforgettable experience.

You will also get spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania, the highest mountain in all of Africa, and also meet the Maasai people during this visit.

Lamu Island

Lamu Town is a UNESCO heritage site and it’s deservedly a special site. Right on the coast, you can see beautiful white houses and buildings and a historic site that was once one of the richest areas in the country.

You’ll also find structures that date back to the 12th century. If you want a less mainstream path you can also visit Shela and Matondoni after immersing yourself in Lamu Town. These are beautiful villages with a lot of history!

Aberdare National Park

For a park that’s completely unique, Aberdare National Park will ensure your fill of waterfalls and animals very different from what you usually find in the savannahs, including monkeys, bird species, and beautiful vegetation.

Ol Pejeta

This is a wonderful conservancy near Mount Kenya. It is a place where you can reflect on the relationship between animals, the environment, and humans. Endangered species have a home here and it’s been historically known as a safe space for animals.

Lake Nakuru

Do you want to see some flamingos? Lake Nakuru is the perfect spot to take a look at these pink birds that are such an emblematic part of Kenya. The lake is located right on the Great Rift Valley and is home to anything from lions to pythons to rhinos.

The wildlife is very rich in this area and there are a variety of landscapes that will make you feel as if you are in two completely different places during the same visit!

Nairobi

Of course, people go to Kenya to enjoy the wildlife and open spaces. However, getting a taste of the bustling city of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, is also a unique experience. Visit some of the markets and get a taste of the local culture.

If you really want to see some more wildlife, visit the city’s Nairobi National Park! Could you imagine you would find something like this in the middle of the city?

The Great Rift Valley

The forces of the Earth are something to be admired and the Great Rift Valley is a clear testament to this. This valley crosses the country from North to South and goes well beyond Kenya. Expect beautiful lakes, hot springs, and wildlife to admire.

Tsavo National Park

This is a great spot for safaris as the variety of animals found here is almost unprecedented. The park is the largest protected area in the country, where elephants, cheetahs, buffalos, and more make their homes.

You’ll be surprised at the many lakes, springs, and rivers, as well as swamps and rapids. And, of course, the large predators including magnificent lions!
